We are losing the battle for encyclopedic content in favor of people intent on hijacking Wikipedia for their own memes. This scourge is a serious waste of time and energy. We must put a stop to this now.

Don Steele from Comedy Central noted that since popular host Stephen Colbert started the ‘wikiality’ craze, than traffic from Wikipedia to the Comedy Central site has increased substantially. He estimated that the company would have to spend around $20,000 a month to see similar numbers from a pay-per-click strategy.

Wikipedia's status in the search engines as an "authority site" is undisputed. Those lucky, well-connected, skillful or famous enough to be cited enjoyed the benefits of Wikipedia's unique "golden link effect."

Wikipedia is not a links dumpster. Treat it that way and prepare for a swift banning. Instead, Patel said to add information first, then links later. And, since people can add images, Wikipedia can be a great place to build a brand with those.

For example, I have a couple of blogs which I write for. They are based around my personal interests and I found some very good Wikipedia entries where I was able to add links to my blogs as external resources. That is because my blogs provide supplementary information to that which is available on Wikipedia in the form of news and industry information.

Ah well, maybe co-founder Larry Sanger can improve on the current model with his Citizendium project. Until then, it might be a good idea to ensure, if you want to found, that is, your organization's presence in Wikipedia – not in a glowing, biased, and trumped up way like we seen often lately from system abusers – just being sure you're there.

How does your search engine treat the No Follow attribute?

  • Google : The Googlebot does not follow that link.
  • Yahoo : If we find a link we make it available to our algorithms to find new content, whether it has a ‘no follow’ attribute or not. However, if the ‘no follow’ attribute is present, it means that no attribution is given to the target from the source of the link.
  • Ask.com : We have never officially supported No Follow, so your questions don’t apply to our crawler/ranking.
  • Yahoo : Yes, the link is available to our crawlers for finding the target. Then the target will be crawled and indexed based on our algorithms.
