Raggio da diametro angolare e distanza

${\mathit {D}}_{*}={\tan \alpha }\cdot {\mathit {d}}$

D* è il diametro della stella, d la distanza e α il diametro angolare espresso in gradi.

Luminosità e magnitudine

Rapporto di luminosità

$F_{2}/F_{1}\approx 2{,}512^{\Delta m}$

ove l'esponente è la differenza di magnitudini (m1-m2)

es. x Sole e Luna:

$x=m_{1}-m_{2}=(-12{,}74)-(-26{,}74)=14{,}00$

Somma di magnitudini

$2{,}512^{-m_{f}}=2{,}512^{-m_{1}}+2{,}512^{-m_{2}}\!\$

ove $m_{f}$ è la magnitudine combinata e $m_{1}$ e $m_{2}$ le magnitudini delle due componenti. Risolvendo l'equazione per $m_{f}$ si ottiene:
