Phrazes for the Young è il primo album solista di Julian Casablancas, leader del gruppo indie rock statunitense The Strokes e The Voidz, pubblicato il 2 novembre 2009[1] e prodotto da Jason Lader.

Produzione, promozione e distribuzione[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

L'album Phrazes for the Young è stato pubblicato con l'etichetta discografica fondata da Julian Casablancas Cult Records e tramite la RCA e Rough Trade Records il 2 novembre 2009 nel Regno Unito e il 3 novembre negli Stati Uniti. Jason Lader e Mike Mogis hanno prodotto l'album[2]. Il titolo del disco fa riferimento a "Phrases and Philosophies for the Use of the Young" una raccolta di aforismi di Oscar Wilde[3].

The format is just a bunch of quotes, which I thought was really rad. But then, well I don’t want to say I was let down, but he’s incredibly witty and it had a cynical, humorous, winking, we’re-all-just-dogs-who-can-talk vibe. So I ended up working from what I wished it was. The idea is that there’s so much knowledge wasted from generation to generation. I was just summoning that yearning for consolidated wisdom.»

Come parte della promozione sul suo canale YouTube l'artista ha condiviso il video Phrazes For The Young Preview[5] con alcune frasi presenti all'interno del Box Set, Limited Edition, Try not to give advice you can't follow e Drunkenness is cowardice, sobriety is loneliness[6]. L'album è stato presentato in anteprima il 31 agosto 2009 nel locale di musica dal vivo Duo Music Exchange di Tokyo, in Giappone. Per celebrare l'uscita Julian Casablancas si è esibito[7] in una serie speciale di spettacoli ogni venerdì sera nel mese di novembre a Los Angeles. La traccia "11th Dimension" è stata trasmessa per la prima volta in un programma ospitato sulla BBC, Radio 1 Zane Lowe Show[8].

Il 31 gennaio 2010 viene rilasciato il video 11th Dimension (Definitvie cut HD) ed è ispirato al film L'ultimo combattimento di Chen di Bruce Lee[9]. Il video è diretto da Warren Fu, amico e collaboratore di lunga data di Casablancas, in precedenza ha diretto il video You Only Live Once (Alternate Version - Official HD Video) del gruppo The Strokes[10].

Il 18 dicembre 2009 esce Phrazes for the Young Box Set, Limited Edition, Luxury Edition Deluxe Set in stile antico, contenente uno storybook, artwork originali ed esclusivi, testi completi dell'album, testi del lato B, "frasi" e fotografie: ogni libro è firmato personalmente da Julian Casablancas[11].
