Etymology of "film"
[modifica wikitesto]Sorry for writing in English, I don't read Italian well and I write it even worse. This article seems to be claiming that the English word film comes form the name of this company. However, I could not find any source to confirm this claim. On the contrary, the Online Etmology Dictionary [1] and the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language [2] both say that the word is much older, having been in the language at least for several centuries before the Italian company manufactured its first film in 1920.
My best guess is that the company name was in fact crafted so that it makes the acronym FILM (a sort of branding if I may say).
To cut a long story short, all Wikipedia articles must be verifiable. Does anyone have a source for the claim of this article? --AdiJapan 04:42, 2 feb 2007 (CET)
- Actually the article claims only that the English word film took its current meaning form this company, not that it was born after it (which would clearly be absurd). 2 says that the current usage is first attested in 1920, which would be compatible with the claim, but 1 dates the first use at 1899/1905, which is not. - Veramente la voce dice solo che che la parola film viene da questa compagnia, non che è nata dopo (il che sarebbe chiaramente assurdo. 2 dice che l'uso attuale nasce nel 1920, il che sarebbe compatibile con l'affermazione, ma 1 ne data l'inizio al 1899/1905, che non lo è.
