COMEST SCHOOL BY FRANCOIS SAINT BONVIN No. 48 FRANCOIS SAINT BONVIN > FRENCH (1817-1888) THE CONVENT SCHOOL The picture shows the interior of a small schoolroom in aFrench convent. Ranged on low benches round the walls arethe pupils, little girls in their uniform dress of course brownwith black cap and apron. All are busy studying their tasks,their heads bent, attentive to their books, while one of theirnumber stands before the mistress to say her lesson. Thelatter, a chubby nun, sits at a green-covered desk raised some-what above the floor, her long pointer leaning against the wallconvenient to her hand. The room is filled with subduedlight, which enters through a window high up on the right,casting a golden glow upon the fair heads and brown dressesof the young children, and illuminating the alphabets andtexts ranged around the room and casting dark shadows uponthe plaster of the walls. No. 49LOUIS EUGENE BOUDIN FRENCH (1824-1898) LOW TIDE The picture shows the narrow entrance to a small harbor,from which the tide has receded, leaving a number of smallboats high and dry upon the sands. On the left a long jetty,on the end of which is a lighthouse, runs out into the sea, andon the right is a broad quay on which a number of people arestrolling. Beyond the bar is a glimpse of the open sea, smil-ing beneath the blue of a Summer sky, and the white sails ofa few distant boats flash in the sunlight. Signed at the lover left, Boudin, 85.
