Ambrogio, at Milan, probably tlie oldest portion of the existingchurch, and antedating by perhaps two centuries that of S. It was expedient to lighten the nuuss of masonrybetween the outer wall and the inner surface of the vault of the apse, and this was donebv constructing a series niches, stjuare in jdan and covered each by a round arch.These niches are in groups of three, separated by tlie long pilaster strips which rise fromprotmd to cornice, and divide the surface of the apse into five compartments, in three ofwhich are large simple round-arclied windows. In the latter churchthere are two stories of galleries, the lower smaller, and divided on four, quite disconnected, and the wall slopes backward from the foot of the arch to itshead. Here also the groups are separated by strong square buttresses rising from theground to the cornice of the apse ; also in S. Celso, where the arches are in groups ofthree.
